va va va VOOM Portraits

Johnny Depp

So I went to the Bass Museum of Art this past Sunday. (why would I go to the beach during memorial day w.e? Ionno, coz I’m a retard I guess).

Anywayyyy. I went for Robert Wilson’s video VOOM Portraits exhibitions. It was pretty cool actually. Wilson got a whole bunch of people, and by people I mean monarchs, actors, singers, and animals, and did live portraits of them. Instead of using good ol’oil and canvas he went all high-tech and placed the videos on fancy schmancy large scale HD plasma flat screens.  Its kinda nifty because they’re all moving and at first it gets you a little off guard because you think its a still image. (I guess i just spoiled it for you. whatevs.)  There is an accompanying soundtrack to each portrait also.

Along with Robert Wilson’s portraits, the Bass Museum is also holding an exhibition of traditional portraits from the 1500’s on. All throughout the 1st floor the portraits are intertwined. The technological differences b/w portraits makes a cool contrast.

I’d suggest that you go check it out. Admission is only $8 for adults, $6 for students and old peeps. And for less than double-digit dollars you can brag to people that you “saw a Botticelli the other day” even if you’ ve never been to Europe before.

2121 Park Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Streets), Miami Beach, Florida 33139
T: 305.673.7530 www.bassmuseum.org

Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm, Sunday 11 am-5 pm, closed Mondays. May 2 - August 3, 2008

Oh and if you’re wondering whom Wilson’s subjects are. They include: Jonnhy Depp (wazzzup!), Dita von Teese, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey jr, Princess Caroline of Monaco, some random car mechanic, and a porcupine.

I love movies. Movies make me happy. Or sad, depending on the movie. (Buhduh). I love Brazilain movies. Everyone knows that Brazilian film is effing wicked. For crying out loud City of God has got to be one of the best movies out there. Not only that, but fuck French, if you ask me Portuguese is definately the sexier language. Aaaand Rodrigo Santoro has got to be one of the most gorgeous human being I have seen. -sigh- .

Back to my point.

The Brazilian Film Festival is coming. May 30 - June 7.  Screenings will be held in The Colony Theatre, The Miami Beach Cinematheque, and the Wolfsonian Museum.  I would write more about it, but I have writer’s block. So IMDB is where its at for you.

Dude.  She Wants Revenge was awesome last night. As of Tuesday there were still circa 800 tickets available to the show, but when I actually got to Revolution the place was pretty effing packed. Attendance # was perhaps the most ideal of all the show i’ve been to. Enough people to give it an awesome vibe, but not crowded like caddle in a trainwagon. I must say that i really didn’t appreciate the fact that they didn’t do an encore, but whatever. They ended the set with Tear You Apart, so after that song I didn’t really give an uff what they did.

Lets see, lets see… oh yes. Another show to post

Dude. Where have I been? I don’t know.

Anyway. There’s lots of shit going on. But I shall be posting it one at a time (my attention span can’t go further than that)

Erykah Baduh w/ The Roots

May 20

@ Mizner Park Ampitheatre (Boca Raton)

49$ - 86$ ( http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0D00407FD60644F4?artistid=781503&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=202 )

Weather Prediction: Cloudy.  I’m freaking glad I caught the Roots at Langerado. Driving to Boca is a little too much for me to see Erykah and The Roots, specially since its on a Tuesday. And truthfully, decent tickets are gone by now. Unless you’re a hxc fan, then I wouldn’t bother.

So thats who they are!

Fuck. I’m truly torn. Stuck in a rut.

So the Pinkertones are playing this Saturday. Which very much so inconvienently interferes with my Cinco de MiMo plans. So whats a girl to do?  Meh. I guess we’ll see.

So check it. The Pinkertones are these 2 blokes from Barcelona. They are dope as funk. They put on wicked shows. No matter the size of the venue they rock the shit outta it with their crafty lights, sounds, and matching white sunglasses. Their playing this Sat as part of The Rhythm Foundations’s Heineken Transatlantic Festival shindigs -which brought us Bonde Do Role last week- . Miami’s own ArtOfficial is also on the list. And their dope as well.  Go check em out. For sures.

The Pinkertones

May 3  (Doors open at 7)

@ North Beach Bandshell  7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach)

20$ http://www.rhythmfoundation.com/, Books & Books (Coral Gables), Sweat Records, Via Brazil, BASE

Theres something about shuttle buses that makes an activity even more fun. (Except when riding the FIU bus from UPC to BBC, in which case i want to slice my veins out.)

Anywayyyyy…This is MiMo’s 1st year “Cinco de Mimo.”… which conveniently ends May cuatro (go figure!). So what fun activities does the MBA have planned for us? Well……:

  • Walking tours
  • Frida Kahlo look-a-like contest (wazzzupppp)
  • piñata cracking (I freaking love piñatas!)
  • movie screening
  • live musica. arriba!

If you don’t know what MiMo stands for, its MiamiModern.

And if you don’t know where its located then read the flyer! -Its right under our Upper East Side. Yes yes, we have an Upper East Side. And even though its not schnazzy like NYC’s, it has a Starbucks which means its not cracktown.

Partty Pix Please

So the day after the Spoon show…

I say to my friend “Dude I saw you at the Spoon show but I didn’t say hi coz i got there late and was in the balcony”

She says: “Dude you should have been there earlier they took us and dressed us up and took pictures. It was mad fun.”

And I say “Hhmmm. Cool”

So now I say “Ooohh. Sweet”

Turns out it was the Polite in Public crew.  They take you. They dress you. And they take pictures of you. Its like those little cabins at the county fair that dress you in a really smelly Western costume where they take pics of you and your family to treasure until the next year’s fair. Cept this one is the fun and corndog-smell-free rock star version.

Here’s the pics for the Spoon show. Wazzuppppp.
